Sonny Arrington and Carlton Allen Shooting News: In Loving Memory of Sonny Arrington & Carlton Allen who Dies in Shooting Incident

A heartbreaking night unfolded in Birmingham as a family gathering meant to bring relatives together in grief turned into another devastating loss. Authorities confirmed that 43-year-old Sonny Arrington, a father of seven from Clarksville, Tennessee, and 76-year-old Carlton Rufus Allen of Birmingham were shot and killed late Saturday inside an Ensley apartment. The family had come together for a barbecue following the funeral of a 29-year-old relative who had been shot and killed in Fairfield just one week earlier.

Birmingham police said the gunfire erupted just before 11:30 p.m. at the Tuxedo Terrace apartment complex off 20th Street. When officers arrived, they found Allen and Arrington deceased, along with a woman who had been wounded.

She was rushed to UAB Hospital, where doctors determined her injuries were not life-threatening. Investigators later learned that multiple relatives were inside the home when the shooting began, adding to the chaos and emotional weight of the tragedy.

Authorities have arrested a 26-year-old woman, identified as Arrington’s niece and Allen’s great-niece. She is currently being held in the Birmingham City Jail as investigators prepare formal capital murder charges involving two or more victims. Police said her sister — the surviving victim — was also injured during the shooting. Early evidence suggests the suspect fired into the apartment from outside, though detectives have not yet determined what sparked the deadly argument. “What we do know is that this is one large, closely connected family,” said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.

After the shooting, the Birmingham Police Department’s Special Enforcement Team quickly mobilized. Officers received information suggesting the suspect had fled toward Bessemer. Working closely with Bessemer police, authorities located her at a residence within two hours and took her into custody without further incident. Fitzgerald praised the rapid arrest, noting it reflected the “focus and dedication” of officers and the strength of partnerships between law enforcement agencies.

As details continue to unfold, grief hangs heavily over the family, already mourning the recent death of Ja’Oree Marquel Brown-Allen. Loved ones describe Arrington as a devoted husband and father who worked hard to support his large family. A GoFundMe page created in his honor calls him “a kind and compassionate person who deeply loved his family,” leaving behind his wife, Candace, and their seven children — two daughters and five sons.
