Paul’s service to the CJSL was marked by unwavering dedication and a strong belief in the transformative power of youth sports. Over the past year and a half, he served as League President, guiding the organization with clarity, professionalism, and a collaborative spirit.
Prior to that, he held the role of Vice President, where he played a critical part in shaping key initiatives, enhancing league operations, and fostering unity among its many clubs.
His work strengthened the league’s structure and helped ensure that young athletes had a safe, supportive, and competitive environment in which to grow. Paul’s contributions extended far beyond administrative leadership.
Within New York’s broader youth soccer community, he was known as a hands-on mentor who never hesitated to support others. As a Director and Coach for Eleftheria Pancyprian Soccer Club, he was deeply involved in player development, dedicating countless hours to training sessions, strategic planning, and team support.
He valued not only athletic excellence but also personal growth, teaching young players discipline, teamwork, and confidence. Before his involvement with Eleftheria, Paul spent many influential years with BW Gottschee, one of the city’s most esteemed youth soccer programs.
There, he helped shape the paths of numerous players, many of whom went on to succeed at higher levels of the game. His coaching style was defined by patience, empathy, and high standards—qualities that earned him respect from colleagues and admiration from families.
Paul believed wholeheartedly in the vision of the CJSL and in the future of youth soccer in New York. He championed progress, encouraged innovation, and continuously sought ways to elevate the league’s standards.
Whether advocating for improved programming, supporting new clubs, or ensuring fairness and integrity across competitions, he brought passion and purpose to every decision. His influence extended off the field as well, where his thoughtful leadership inspired stronger community ties and a more unified approach to youth sports.
As the CJSL mourns this incredible loss, the organization has asked for compassion and privacy for the Kontonis family.
